Property Council Calls for Fair Government Rates


The Property Council has written to the CEO’s of numerous local governments regarding inconsistent rate increases, and has encouraged councils preparing their 2019/20 budgets to align their rating strategies with the Queensland Government’s best practice guideline.

At present, Queensland’s differential and minimum rating system provides local governments with unconstrained freedom to determine rates. This has led to non-residential properties being subjected to highly unpredictable rating increases year-on-year, as councils focus on the political imperative to keep residential rates as low as possible.

In the correspondence, the Property Council has highlighted the benefits of implementing the state government’s ‘Guideline on Equity and Fairness in Rating for Queensland Local Government’- a document that outlines six basic principles to assist local governments in developing a fair rating strategy.
