Queensland rental reforms have been introduced to Parliament.

The Queensland Government has introduced the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024 which seeks to bring a range of changes to Queensland’s rental laws.

Key changes included in the bill:

  • Attaching a 12 month rent increase limit to the property as opposed to tenancy
  • Imposing bans on rent bidding
  • Requiring bond claims to be supported by evidence
  • Requiring renters are provided with a minimum 48 entry notice
  • Setting up a prescribed form to be used to apply for a rental home
  • Limiting reletting costs based on how long is left on a fixed term lease
  • Providing renters with a fee-free option to pay rent and choice about how they apply for a rental property.

The bill will also establish a head of power to establish a rental code of conduct, a portable bond scheme and a framework for parties to agree on modifications.

The advocacy team of the Property Council’s Queensland Division is preparing a submission ahead of the 10 April deadline and welcomes member feedback on what the amendments will mean for you.
