Recent amendments to the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979 which commenced in March 2018 inserted a requirement for all local councils to prepare a local strategic planning statement at least every 7 years. These must include the basis for strategic planning in the council area, having regard to economic, social and environmental matters, planning priorities for the area consistent with the relevant strategic plan (Regional or District) and the actions required to achieve those planning priorities, including how council will monitor and implement those actions.
The Hon Rob Stokes MP, Minister for Planning has recently extended the timeframes for the councils preparing their plans. All local councils in the Greater Sydney Region have until 1 October 2019 to commence exhibition of their draft local strategic planning statements and they must be finalised before 31 March 2020.
Following intensive research and engagement with communities, just over 10 councils in Sydney have commenced a public exhibition process for their draft local strategic planning statements and the following councils have agreed to deliver an update on the content of their plans and answer questions from members.
