In December 2021, the Property Council launched a campaign in response to the Queensland Government’s announcement of a new ‘land tax adjustment’ for property ownership in Queensland.
We immediately expressed our dismay and disbelief at the unprecedented tax grab on property owners in the Sunshine State, and followed with a coordinated campaign of thoughtful advocacy, research and thought leadership including an op-ed in the Courier Mail, national media coverage and powerful demonstration of the economic impact.
The successful advocacy campaign resulted in the Queensland Government abandoning the interstate land tax policy in September 2022.
With opportunities like the Brisbane 2032 Olympics on the horizon, ensuring Queensland has a stable and attractive investment environment has never been more important and the Property Council will continue to advocate for policy that drives inbound investment, increases the critical supply of new homes and improves the quality of life for Queenslanders.
Queensland Executive Director of the Property Council, Jen Williams, said of the Government’s decision to reverse the controversial policy: “Walking back from this tax sends an important signal that Government is listening and is willing to take on board the feedback of industry.”
