The Property Council welcomes the opportunity to make a submission to the ongoing inquiry on Nature Repair Market Bill 2023 and Nature Repair Market (Consequential Amendments) Bill 2023 [Provisions].

The State of the Environment Report 2021 sounded the alarm. It found that ‘overall, the state and trend of the environment of Australia are poor and deteriorating as a result of increasing pressures from climate change, habitat loss, invasive species, pollution and resource extraction’ – there is an urgent need to take decisive action to restore our natural heritage.

The proposed NRM, if delivered effectively, can support investment in biodiversity and drive environmental improvements across Australia. It can also be a key pathway to deliver the Government’s national commitment to conserve 30 per cent of Australia’s landmass by 2030.

We are strongly supportive of the development of a streamlined NRM to attract private sector funding and contribute to the rehabilitation of our natural heritage.
