Examining the Future Task of Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority
The Property Council welcomes the opportunity to provide comment on the independent inquiry into Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority. While we recognise the potential health and safety risks that must be considered when redeveloping land for sensitive uses, we believe a simplified system is needed to address these issues.
The Property Council believes there is an opportunity in Victoria for sites undergoing development to have some form of accountability to EPA on environmental outcomes without the prescription or negative exposure of enforcement. We further support a program where incentives such as streamlined and fast tracked approvals are offered in exchange for remediation by landowners. This would mean that not all developments have to go through a lengthy and complex determination period, leaving the EPA to focus on high risk and more complex decisions.
