(From L-R) Frankie Muskovic, Alastair Leighton, Mark Jones, Natasha Mulcahy and Todd Pepper deliver the final panel session of the inaugural Queensland Sustainability Forum.

On Thursday, 18 April, the inaugural Queensland Sustainability Forum went ahead giving attendees a half-day of everything sustainability.

With a broad line up of speakers, attendees were given insights into the sustainability opportunities that lay at the feet of the property industry in Queensland.

With seven sessions throughout the day, it commenced with Ian Lieblich, Head of ESG at EG giving a simplified history of climate change, and outlining how Australia is currently tracking towards net zero.

This first session was followed by Ashleigh Morris, CEO of Coreo. Ashleigh spoke about the circularity of the build environment with particular focus on the importance of analysing every step of the supply chain and about thinking outside the box to reuse and repurpose materials.

Following, Ashleigh remained on stage and was joined by Ian and moderator Frankie Muskovic, Director – National Policy, Property Council of Australia. In this panel discussion there was a strong focus on how organisations can reduce their carbon footprint.

The fourth session was presented by Emily Low, Technical Director – Sustainability at Mott MacDonald. Emily explored the legacy opportunities and how the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will accelerate Queensland’s transition to a low carbon economy.

The next session had a legal perspective, as Kristy Dorney, Partner at McMahon Clarke, provided an overview of Australia’s first instance of ‘greenwashing’ litigation, and emphasised the importance of maintaining compliance and transparency in this space.

Emily was invited back on stage for a panel discussion with Kristy and Alastair Leighton, Director – Brilliant Cities, AECOM where they took questions from the audience.

Following lunch Frankie (as moderator) and Alastair joined Todd Pepper, Executive Director & Founder of Alceon, Mark Jones, Senior Manager – Energy and Climate, nbn and Natasha Mulcahy, Director of ESG – CBRE on stage, as they provided attendees with some of their key learnings and experiences in the ESG space.
