The Property Council welcomed a range of attendees to the Spotlight on Suburban Renewal lunch to learn what the next step in Brisbane’s Suburban Renewal Journey will look like.
Brisbane City Council Planning Chair Cr Adam Allan spoke about Council’s growing focus on suburban renewal as exemplified in Council’s recent Brisbane: Our Productive City Strategy and the Sustainable Growth Strategy.
Suburban Renewal is not a new thing in Brisbane with world class examples including the revitalisation of Tenerife/Newstead and more recently Howard Smith Wharves. However, with land at a premium it would be an essential future component in driving future housing outcomes and economic activity in Brisbane.
Following this Todd Perry – General Manager at Renewal SA added a national perspective to the conversation when he shared some of Adelaide’s learnings from their own Suburban Renewal journey.
Todd profiled several projects including the Tonsley Innovation District and Lot Fourteen to highlight the role Government can play in catalysing private sector development in suburban renewal areas.
Following this, both speakers joined Kate Meyrick Director at Urbis for a panel discussion that identified the key themes that would underpin the success of Brisbane’s ongoing suburban renewal journey.
Some of the key takeaways and themes from the panel discussion were:
- Suburbs are about lives and livelihoods – therefore it follows that better suburbs must be about better lives and stronger livelihoods.
- Suburbs are intrinsically linked to the competitiveness of our cities, literally powering regions.
- There is room for everyone, avoid displacement and gentrification.
- We need to think boldly towards the future, what seems like a stretch today will be business as usual within a decade.
A special thanks to Urbis for making this event possible.
