On Wednesday 17 May, at a Property Council of Australia event, Dr Miriam Yates, PhD shared some of her research and case studies about how harnessing innovation can support a gender-equal future.
Hosted at Allens – Dr Yates’ delivered an eye-opening keynote that highlighted ongoing disparities between males and females.
Some takeaways from Dr Yates’ keynote included:
- Women have been comprising 57.5% of degree-qualified work entrants and have surpassed male graduates since as early as 1985.
- It’s disheartening to note that Australian female graduates, with the same age, experience, and qualifications as their male counterparts, still earn 5.5% less upon graduation.
- The representation of women in leadership positions remains low. In 2022, only 6.5% of CEOs in the ASX200 were women.
- Women CEOs control just 3.2% of the listed market capital, emphasising the need to break down barriers and create a more inclusive environment for women to thrive in executive positions.
Chris Layton, Director of HR Operations, Global at Multiplex and Rukshana Sashankan, General Manager – Practitioners, PEXA also joined Dr Yates for a panel discussion, moderated by Rebecca Aichholzer, Head of Business Systems Success at QIC, which took a deep dive into their perspectives on innovation.
The learnings from this panel discussion focussed on the principle that innovation doesn’t always have to be big and everything is relative on our journey to equality.
Of particular note was the necessary contribution that must be made via voluntary innovation – the panel emphasised that this will be the driving force to achieving equality.
Thank you to Allens for hosting this event and the team at Multiplex for sponsoring the event.
