Brisbane City Council paves the way for further Purpose-Built Student Accommodation

Brisbane City Council has updated how infrastructure charges impact purpose-built student accommodation.

The Brisbane City Council (BCC) has reviewed how infrastructure charges are calculated for rooming accommodation and student accommodation developments.

It was identified by the Student Accommodation Council that the BCC’s interpretation of a ‘suite’ for the purposes of levying infrastructure charges had changed. The effect of this is that each room within a multi-share apartment now attracts an infrastructure levy, effectively as if it was a sole occupancy unit.

The Property Council has been informed that BCC has reviewed how these infrastructure charges are calculated for rooming accommodation and student accommodation developments. As a result, new provisions have been introduced to enable these purpose-built developments to be charged within a suite of up to five bedrooms, instead of being charged by each bedroom.

BCC has also reduced the charge rate for a bedroom that is not within a suite.
