A graduate engineer with Mirvac Constructions, Amanda Torville says her most valuable skill is questioning ‘why?’ Find out what makes her tick in our #iworkinproperty series.
Amanda Torville, Graduate Engineer, Mirvac Constructions
Property is… the freedom to create a space that reflects my nature and vision, representing all aspects of me.
I choose to work in property because… I want to be a part of shaping how people and the built environment interact with each other and how that interaction affects the communities we live in.
I describe my job to friends and family… as a changing work environment where no two days are the same. My role heavily relies on making quick and rational decisions that can heavily impact the outcome.
My three workday essentials… iPad (to assist with documentation and decision making), phone (communication is the most essential) and a coffee card (coffee is the lifeblood of any property professional!).
My typical day at work… revolves around program deliverables. I always have to be looking at what is happening in the present and how a decision today will impact the future.
My most valuable skill… is questioning why! The ability to understand clearly what the underlying issue is allows for a well-rounded decision to be made. With this comes the ability to think outside the box.
My biggest career lesson… was being thrown in the deep end! During my first year at Mirvac I was truly challenged having to manage multiple deliverables only having just started. I often reflect on that time and how it has provided me resilience in the work environment.
My childhood dream… has always been to be involved in property in one way or another. I have always been surrounded by encouragement from my family who helped me experience the property industry through renovating multiple properties.
My biggest inspiration… I truly have had so many people impact my life in amazing ways that there isn’t just one person who has been more inspirational than the other.
My downtime is spent… either outside and exploring different built and natural landscapes with my husband or on Pinterest.
My next big step… is to keep on pursuing knowledge and surrounding myself around inspiration and creativity. There is so many different aspects of property that I enjoy, and I wouldn’t want to limit myself.
