- Western Australia Retirement Living Reforms
Some elements of current retirement village legislation reform are being fast-tracked by the McGowan Government’s State Recovery Advisory Group. The Property Council recently took a pulse test of the industry’s views on buy backs in Western Australia. The response was clear: 66.67 per cent of respondents provide some form of buybacks. Operators were asked in a typical year what percentage of residents move on, pass away or are placed into aged care. Importantly, the average of residents moving somewhere else was 0.87 per cent.
Ben Myers, the Property Council’s executive director for retirement living, says members support “sensible reform”, but want to ensure these reforms “recognise the lawfulness of existing contractual arrangements, allow for ongoing contract choice and ensure a viable retirement living sector that can afford to continue delivering affordable, safe and secure age-friendly communities”.
