Past-President’s Scholarship recipient Georgia Douglas with parents Scott and Penny Douglas
At the Queensland Property Market Outlook on 10 February 2023, Georgia Douglas, 22, was named the third recipient of the Past-President’s Scholarship in Queensland.
The Past-President’s Scholarship, which comes with $5,000 in financial assistance and $5,000-worth of experiential benefits, is seen as an important steppingstone for talented, young property professionals.
Ms Douglas was thrilled saying she was keen to begin taking advantage of the opportunity on offer and making connections within the Property Council network.
“I’m really excited to be an observer of the Future Directions Committee. Being a part of this committee will give me a great opportunity to network with future leaders and allow me to gain greater insight into the workings of the property industry,” she said.
“I’m looking forward to being able to listen and contribute to the various issues facing the property sector and to engage with the Past President network as well. I am so grateful to be able to tap into the wealth of experienced people associated with the Property Council.”
Property is in Ms Douglas’ blood – with both of her parents sitting on Property Council committees and both of her grandfathers also having had careers in the sector.
“I’d originally started a finance degree and decided that wasn’t for me. I’d had plenty of exposure to property growing up from my mum, my dad and grandfathers who all helped me to grow my love for property.
“At the moment I’m undertaking a dual degree of law honours and property economics – and working in the property team as a paralegal at Herbert Smith Freehills.” she said.
Georgia’s parents, Scott Douglas, Chair of the Queensland Social Infrastructure Committee and Penny Douglas, member of the Queensland Commercial Office Committee expressed their pride in Georgia.
“We are so proud of Georgia’s achievements. Her decision to embark on a career in property and all that has to offer, is really exciting for her and we have no doubt she will embrace all the opportunities this industry has to offer,” they said.
“Conversations around the dinner table are often dominated by real estate chat and we have no doubt the year ahead will have a strong slant toward the issues surrounding our respective Property Council committees.
“Georgia is developing strong connections in her own right and the opportunity forwarded to her by the Property Council through the Past-President’s Scholarship will strengthen those bonds and provide a strong base for her future.
“As parents we are obviously a little bias, but Georgia is a respectful, enthusiastic, calm and motivated young women who is keen to learn and continue to grow as a person and professional.” they said.”
Bruce Harper, General Manager at AVID Property Group and Queensland Past-President (2019-20) was thrilled to be able to continue giving gifted young property talent a head start in their careers.
“I have a deep appreciation for empowering passionate, up and coming property professionals, and the other Past Presidents of the Property Council and I are grateful to be in this unique position to provide this opportunity,” Mr Harper said.
“Georgia has displayed a fantastic drive and a great deal of potential. She was a standout candidate and I look forward to engaging with her over the coming year as she continues her studies and working in the property industry.”
