Mirvac restructures its retail business, former WA premier Alan Carpenter joins the Development WA board and Jane Fitzgerald returns to the Property Council.

Mirvac is restructuring its business, with the retail property division folded into the commercial division and led by current office and industrial head Campbell Hanan. Retail head Susan MacDonald, who has been with Mirvac since 2010, will leave the developer at the end of the year. Hanan, who was CEO of Investa Office before taking up the role with Mirvac in 2016, will be head of commercial property from 1 October and will assume responsibility for Mirvac’s build-for-rent portfolio from chief investment officer Brett Draffen. Meanwhile, Draffen will take on Mirvac’s commercial and mixed-use developments in an expanded role. Shane Gannon, who has been Mirvac’s chief financial officer since 2013, is also leaving the company. Stuart Penklis will continue to head up residential and group construction.

Western Australia’s former premier Alan Carpenter has joined the board of DevelopmentWA. Carpenter was also state development minster and the former executive general manager for corporate affairs of Australia’s largest private sector employer, Wesfarmers. The DevelopmentWA Board comprises of both the Western Australian Land Authority and Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority boards. Carpenter will sit on both the WALA and MRA boards for the next two years. Kylee Schoonens, an architect with Fratelle Group and active Property Council member, leaves the board after four years, while Dale Page has had her tenure on renewed for a further three years.

Former CEO of Renew Donna Luckman has joined Moreland City Council’s team as Zero Carbon Moreland campaigns lead. Luckman led Renew, a national, not-for-profit organisation that inspires, enables and advocates for people to live sustainably, for six years.

Legal firm HopgoodGanim has promoted Ivan Orola to partner. Orola, who is based in Brisbane office, is a career property lawyer focused on retirement living, commercial and retail property. Prior to joining HopgoodGanim in 2018, Orola held a senior in-house role with QIC. He is an active member of the Property Council. Orola’s appointment brings the firm’s partnership count to 42 from 1 October 2020.

As Australia’s transport boom increases the demand for unique tunnelling and geotechnical knowledge, GHD has appointed Sam Mirlatifi a new technical director. Mirlatifi has managed design and delivery of major projects in Australia including North East Link, WestConnex 1B and various tunnel and Metro stations in Sydney and Melbourne.

The Property Council is delighted to announce that Jane Fitzgerald will return to her former role as NSW executive director. Fitzgerald was in the role since 2016, and will return following a short period of exploring other opportunities. Belinda Ngo, who has been acting NSW executive director will return to her former role leading the Property Council’s capital markets division, as will SA Deputy executive director, Torie Brown, who had stepped into Ngo’s shoes.

In other Property Council news, Collin Jennings has been appointed national policy manager for cities, housing and planning. Jennings has been part of the Property Council’s capital markets team for more than two years and will commence his new role in early November.
