Peet Limited’s former CEO Warwick Hemsley, Mirvac founder Bob Hamilton, Committee for Perth CEO Marion Fulker, Epaminondas Katsalidis and Property Council stalwart Medy Hassan are among those on the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

A slew of honours has been handed out to people across the property, construction and infrastructure industries as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours for 2021.

Warwick Hemsley AO, the former CEO and non-executive director of Peet Limited, was made an Officer in the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the arts, the community and to the residential development sector.

Mirvac founder Robert Hamilton AM was recognised for significant service to the property development sector, and to urban renewal. Hamilton was inducted into the Property Hall of Fame in 2016 and was CEO and co-founder of the developer from 1972-2005. Read our story, Lessons from a legend, from the Property Australia archives.

Epaminondas Katsalidis AM, or Nonda, co-founding partner of Fender Katsalidis, was honoured for significant service to architecture, and to sustainable construction innovations. Katsalidis developed a new prefabrication and modular construction system and an automated panel production facility, Unitised Building, in Melbourne. He was also involved with the design of the Museum of Old and New Art in Tasmania.

Marion Fulker AM, CEO of the Committee of Perth since its establishment in 2007, is also a board member of Infrastructure Australia. She was honoured for her significant service to urban planning and infrastructure development.

Dr Judith Yates AM, a prominent housing researcher and Senior Visiting Fellow at the UNSW City Futures Research Institute, was recognised for her significant service to housing and economic research, and to education. Dr Bronwyn Evans AM, CEO of Engineers Australia since 2019 and former CEO of Standards Australia was honoured for significant service to engineering, to standards, and to medical technology.

Other Members of the Order of Australia include Charles Justin AM, founding director of SJB Architects, and architects Shelley Penn AM and Lolita Moyhla AM, for their contributions to their profession. Harvey Lister AM, founder, former chairman and CEO of AEG Ogden, Rodney Fitzroy AM, founder of commercial real estate agency Fitzroys, Soheil Abedian AM, chairman of Sunland Group Limited, Danny Murphy AM, founder and executive chairman of developer LWP Group, Mark Birrell AM, former chairman of Infrastructure Australia, and Vallence Simonds AM, founder and managing director of Simonds Homes, were all applauded.

Medy Hassan OAM was recognised for his service to the building and construction industry. He is the former national general manager of Hindmarsh Group, long-time contributor to the Property Council ACT and judge of the RLB / Property Council of Australia National Innovation and Excellence Awards since 2013. Other medal recipients include Dick Martin OAM, who has held a range of positions with Master Builders Australia in the Northern Territory, Roger Poole OAM, chairman of Bates Smart for many years and long-time contributor to the Property Council in Victoria, Urban designer Dominic Richards OAM and Western Australian real estate practitioner and Harcourts agent Thomas Massam OAM.

Calibre Australia, a diversified professional services, construction and maintenance specialist, is fuelling growth with the appointment of new general managers. David Middleton – previously at Jacobs Engineering Group – has been appointed general manager for water, power and energy, while Clive Baker has joined from WSP as general manager for transport, property and places. They will work alongside mining and resources general manager George Nuich.

Meredith Hodgman has taken on a new role as associate director of places and partnerships with KPMG. The smart cities champion was previously international engagement manager with the City of Sydney and senior trade advisor of Austrade for future cities.

Slattery is Australia’s first quantity surveying firm to launch a carbon planning service. Led by director Tom Dean, the new service will be delivered in conjunction with cost planning to help clients achieve net zero and sustainability targets.

Michael Coverdale is the new managing director of m3property’s Brisbane office. Coverdale takes the reins from Ross Perkins who has decided to step aside after being in the top position for the past 14 years. Perkins will remain on as a director. Coverdale has been with m3property for seven years providing valuation services as a director in the commercial sector.

Karen Chan has joined Bates Smart as business development and marketing lead in Sydney. Chan has worked in Hong Kong and Shanghai for international design practices including Aedas, HBA and B+H Architects. She has also worked in workplace strategy and business development for CBRE and Gallagher Jeffs in Sydney.

CBRE has recruited several market leading specialists to its Adelaide valuations and advisory services team. Adrian Burg has joined as director, with a primary focus on the valuation of infill development sites and residential projects. Fellow director Rebecca McCrea will undertake valuations, advisory and consultancy assignments. Iain Henshaw has returned to CBRE as director and will specialise in commercial office valuations across Adelaide. Dominica Hatfield has been appointed assistant valuer, while Adam Linke has been appointed valuer, having completed his traineeship and transitioning from the CBRE residential team in early 2020. The recent recruitment drive follows the appointment of former JLL executive and industrial valuation specialist Paul McKay in February to lead CBRE’s South Australian commercial valuation and advisory services business.

Cistri’s inaugural regional director, Peter Hyland, will step down from his role at the end of June and return to Urbis Australia. Founding director and property economist, Jack Backen, will take on the role. Urbis launched Cistri in 2016 as its international brand. Cistri has been involved with planning and strategy projects in Singapore, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia and China. Hyland will continue to work with Urbis and Cistri clients from his base in Brisbane.

Jodi Birch has joined Colliers’ Melbourne CBD office in the role of associate director of research after relocating back to Australia from the UK, where she covered Australian markets for London-based property analytics and consultancy firm PMA. Tom Larwill takes on the role of senior executive for retail agency in the Melbourne East office and will focus on metropolitan and city fringe retail markets. Larwill moves across from Morley Commercial where he spent four years specialising in retail strip leasing and major projects.

Herron Todd White, Australia’s largest independent valuation and property advisory firm, has announced a significant corporate restructure. After three decades of operating as a network of local-partner-owned offices, moves are underway to consolidate offices. The company is in the process of due diligence before merging two entities to create a branch of Herron Todd White in Victoria and Tasmania. The latest merger follows consolidation in Western Australia in 2020 and New South Wales and ACT in 2019. CEO Gary Brinkworth says “this is just the beginning of what will be a significant shift in our corporate structure”.
