Property Champions of Change impact report

  • December 07, 2021

More than 70 per cent of organisations that make up the Property Champions of Change either achieved or improved gender equality in leadership roles across their organisations in 2021.

  Three key takeaways:

  • The new-look Property Champions of Change is now made up of both male and female leaders, and welcomed 8 new members in 2021
  • Gender balance was achieved across the group of 24 companies in women’s representation (44.85), women’s recruitment (49.9%) and women’s promotions (42.9%)
  • The group focused on three areas: growing the talent pool, personal leadership and improving workplace responses to domestic and family violence.

The 2021 Property Champions of Change Coalition Impact Report showcases a series of measures that property companies have introduced to deliver positive change.

According to Bob Johnston, Chair of the Property Champions of Change steering committee and CEO of The GPT Group, the impact report is an important record of practical action across the property industry.

“What’s so pleasing about this report, isn’t just the figures it presents, but rather the real and tangible initiatives Champions’ organisations are introducing to make their workplaces safer and more inclusive of women.

“It’s the new parental leave policies, the in-depth studies into pay equity, the action plans, and the targeted recruitment of senior women that are, and will continue to, bear fruit.”

Johnston says it is “particularly pleasing” to see 43 members “achieve or move closer” to gender balance across 72 per cent of leadership categories.

“The group had three main areas of focus for the year, which included growing the talent pool, embedding the work via the personal leadership of the champions, and improving workplace responses to domestic and family violence.

“Of course, the report also shows where there is more to do and will help us deploy our effort and focus into 2022,” Johnston adds.

Scentre Group’s chief executive officer, Peter Allen, is one of the founding champions. “I’m really proud of our team and the progress we’ve made in 2021,” he says. Scentre Group received White Ribbon Australia workplace accreditation this year, “a key milestone in our pursuit to address and end gendered violence and sexual harassment against women,” Allen says. Scentre Group was also recognised as an AWEI Gold employer and was included in the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index.

“Our employee-led diversity, equity and inclusion council has seven working groups and every one of them is making meaningful improvements to the way we work and engage with each other. We know this is working because our engagement levels across the organisation is very high at 85 per cent. In 2022 we will remain focused on creating a workplace where everyone feels safe to bring their whole self to work.”
