Charter Hall’s Adrian Harrington will chair the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute. Barry Jackson joins Defence Housing Australia as its new managing director.
The Australian Government has appointed Adrian Harrington (pictured left) as part-time independent chairperson of the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute, the independent organisation responsible for undertaking and disseminating research on housing, homelessness and cities. Harrington joined Charter Hall as its head of capital and product development in 2018 following the acquisition of Folkestone. He has also held senior positions at Mirvac, James Fielding Group, Deutsche Asset Management and Paladin Australia, and was head of research at the Property Council for six years in the 1990s. Harrington is also a non-executive director of the National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation. Two independent directors have also been appointed. Helen Glanville’s experience spans spanning property, housing and government and she is a director of not-for-profit Purpose property management and sales. Karen Synon is a current member of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and has worked in a range of community development and education roles. Harrington takes over from outgoing chairperson Tony De Domenico OAM.
Defence Housing Australia has appointed Barry Jackson as managing director for a five-year term. Jackson is currently the deputy secretary responsible for service delivery operations with the Department of Human Services. Jackson was formerly CEO of UGL Australia and New Zealand, which is Australia’s largest provider of property management services. Jackson replaces Jan Mason who retired in January.
The GPT Group has appointed Tracey Horton AO to its board. Horton currently chairs education provider Navitas and is Commissioner for Tourism Western Australia. Her most recent executive role was as dean of the business school at the University of Western Australia.
Jonathan Betts (pictured right) has joined Knight Frank as partner in charge of projects and precincts in the NSW office leasing team. Betts was most recently director of leasing for Property NSW where he managed many of Sydney’s largest pre-commitment leasing deals in recent years.
Urbis has a new regional director in Victoria: Matthew Cleary. Property expert Cleary has been with the firm for more than 15 years, holding several leadership roles including, most recently, group director of real estate advisory. Cleary succeeds Peter Small, who after a decade as regional director takes on a new role as director of Urbis’ Melbourne planning team.
National law firm Piper Alderman established a real estate team in Brisbane. Partner Warren Denny, who moves across from international firm K&L Gates, will lead a team including special counsels Kylie Maxwell and Lyndal Draper, lawyer Alexandra Gaggin and paralegal Caitlyn Slater.
Amanda Steele (pictured left), executive managing director of CBRE Asia Pacific, has taken home the NSW award for medium and large businesses in the annual Telstra Business Women’s Awards. Steele was recognised for her role championing diversity, leadership and sustainability in the property industry.
