oOh! billboards bring art to 12 million Australians

  • February 25, 2020

An innovative outdoor art event takes works of art from the country’s leading female artists beyond the walls of the National Gallery of Australia, showcasing oOh!media’s network as a public space medium.

Commencing 24 February, the six-week Know My Name outdoor art event features works from 45 of Australia’s leading female artists and is expected to reach an audience of more than 12 million people across capital cities and regional areas.

Seventy-six works of art from the National Gallery of Australia will be exhibited on more than 1,500 locations across oOh!’s billboard, street, retail, office, café, venue and airport networks.

Neil Ackland, oOh!media’s chief content and creative officer, says the campaign champions some of Australia’s best female artists by bringing their works into the lives of everyday Australians.

“The Know My Name campaign demonstrates our commitment to the equality conversation and is the perfect initiative to really showcase how oOh!’s network can be used as a public space medium,” Ackland says.

To ensure the campaign reaches Australians far and wide, Ackland says oOh!’s Excite panels will bring the art event to a regional town for two weeks in late March. Local school groups and members of the public will be able to view the art and use the interactive touch screen capability to learn about the artists.

Artists included in the exhibition include Archibald prize winner Del Kathryn Barton, acclaimed Indigenous artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye, photographer and sculptor Fiona Hall and celebrated 20th century painter Grace Cossington Smith.

Sally Smart, artist and member of the National Gallery of Australia Council says “recognising and celebrating the work of women artists is the first step in addressing inequality and we hope that as many people as possible see their art, hear their stories and know their names”.

As part of the campaign, the National Gallery of Australia will also be running an exhibition of Australian women artists across its gallery spaces in Canberra from 30 May.
