Housing Minister Clare O’Neil and Shadow Housing Minister Michael Sukkar addressed attendees at the Property Council’s National Housing Solutions Summit in Melbourne yesterday, outlining their housing plans as Australians prepare to vote.
Ms O’Neil told attendees Labor focus was on building more homes.
“Because for a generation we have not built enough homes. And we know more housing means more affordable homes for Australians.
“Under the National Housing Accord, driven by our Prime Minister, our country is striving to build 1.2 million homes over five years.
“An ambitious target, because boldness and ambition are exactly what is needed. We’re making investments across key areas to unlock these homes.
“In our first term, we have re-built the foundations of Commonwealth leadership in housing. $33 billion of investments in housing – building more homes, making it easier to buy, and better to rent.”
Mr Sukkar said the Coalition will “not accept a situation where an entire generation of Australians don’t have the same opportunities for home ownership that previous generations of Australians have enjoyed”.
“I often talk about the four pillars. Everything that we say and do fits within the four pillars of assisting with the deposit hurdle, helping with serviceability and access to finance, using the Commonwealth and its balance sheet to drive supply and reducing regulation.
“Everything we’ve announced to date touches on those pillars, and everything we’ll say between now and election day will neatly fall within one of those four pillars.
“We will single handedly focus on home ownership, single handedly focus on that opportunity for Australians for not just their economic wellbeing, but their physical, emotional and social wellbeing. And that’s what drives me, and I can ensure you that is what drives Peter Dutton and our team.”
