Member Briefings, Launch of Invest Wollongong and New Member: Walsh & Monaghan Valuers

  • November 06, 2019

It is crazy to think that its already November! Over the last month we have been gearing up for our end of year events and hosting some fantastic Member Briefings for our members with UOW Innovation Campus on their new Health & Wellbeing Precinct and with ANZ on Illawarra’s Property and Economic Outlook. These were both really great, informative briefings in which also provided members with good networking opportunities – so thank you to UOW and ANZ for hosting us.

Last week, we attended an Illawarra Business Chamber Executive Forum with the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Hon Rob Stokes MP who spoke about the region’s unique position, how to plan for its success, transport connectivity and precinct planning. More importantly, the Minister announced that the Illawarra Shoalhaven Plan will undergo a revision with consultation commencing shortly and a revised plan to be in place in November 2020. We look forward to working with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment over the coming months through this process.

Advantage Wollongong also celebrated its 10th Birthday by launching a re-brand to Invest Wollongong and a stakeholder program which enables any business or organisation to become part of a program to promote the city and create more local opportunities. Wollongong also made its official debut on the National RLB Crane Index, with 18 cranes currently across the city skyline – it is fantastic to see we are now on the map.

Lastly, we officially welcome Walsh & Monaghan Valuers as new members to the Property Council and look forward to seeing you at our end of year events – Illawarra Future Directions Trivia Extravaganza on 29 November and our Illawarra Christmas Celebration on 11 December in which we will be hearing from Property Council’s Executive team Ken Morrison, Jane Fitzgerald and Carl Schibrowski. These are going to be two excellent events, so don’t forget to register!

Member Briefings in October: UOW Health & Wellbeing precinct & Anz Property Outlook

On 3 October, we held a Member Briefing with the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus on their proposed Health & Wellbeing Precinct in partnership with Lendlease. The event was attended by over 70 people, with attendees hearing from Professor Alison Jones – UOW Deputy Vice Chancellor (Health & Communities) and Arabella Rohde, Senior Development Manager for Lendlease.

The planned precinct which envisages a place where you can ‘Live Well Longer’ and is Australia’s first intergenerational university community will bring together living, working, learning and growing together in an environment that supports complete physical, social and mental health and wellbeing.

Stage 1 of the Precinct will include a Primary and Community Health Clinic, Seniors Living Apartments, Residential Aged Care Facility, Early Childhood Education Care Centre and a green heart that is the central hub that welcomes visitors to the Precinct.

Thank you to the University of Wollongong and Lendlease for hosting this briefing which provided great insights for our members!

On 23 October, we also held a Member Briefing with ANZ’s Daniel Gradwell – Associate Director, Property Division, on the property outlook for the Illawarra and economic insights from around the state and Australia. The briefing provided members with a great understanding of what is happening across the National economy and how different sectors of the property market are performing.

Daniel also provided insights into the growing opportunities and challenges for the property sector and what this means for the Illawarra and Wollongong CBD. It was a great opportunity to hear from other members and have a discussion around what is happening locally, so thank you Daniel and ANZ for hosting this fantastic briefing!

Invest wollongong: Advantage wollongong re-brands ‘Invest wollongong’ and celebrates 10 years

Advantage Wollongong celebrated its 10th Birthday on 22 October and officially relaunched as Invest Wollongong. Though the objective stays the same for the program to ensure that ‘Wollongong is to be known domestically and internationally as a superior business location’, the re-brand reflects the changes made over the last 10 years and where we are heading in welcoming new businesses and investment to our city.

Invest Wollongong also launched its new Stakeholder Program, which enables any business or organisation to become part of a program to promote the city and create more local opportunities to attract jobs and investment to the region. The new brand also includes a new website and refreshed communication materials which you can view here.

Also making news is the official debut of Wollongong on the National RLB Crane Index, with 18 cranes currently in the sky across the city (and more to come). The index which is published by Rider Levett Bucknall biannually in Australia now includes Wollongong in its reporting using data provided by the Wollongong Council’s Economic Development team.

With only Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra, Perth and the Gold Coast ranking ahead, Wollongong remains at the top of regional locations included in this report and it is fantastic to see the development and invest across the city. Read more here.
