Construction on AMP Capital’s $142 million Marrickville Metro shopping centre is underway, as a two-year project creates 200 jobs and supports a growing Sydney community.
The development, which AMP Capital is managing on behalf of owner UniSuper, will extend the existing 22,000 sqm centre – which opened in 1987 – by 11,000 sqm. The redevelopment will add 44 new retailers including Coles, a fresh food precinct and indoor and al fresco dining options.
Marrickville Metro’s reimagining will celebrate the food and art culture of Sydney’s inner west and reflect the industrial heritage of the area. It will also enhance the existing retail, leisure, dining and fresh food offerings.
Carmel Hourigan, AMP Capital’s global head of real estate, says the development will deliver “our shared vision of the future of retail” and will support the significant growth and transformation in Marrickville and the inner west.
Designed by Hames Sharley, the redevelopment of an upcycled industrial warehouse next door will capture the inner west vibe.
According to UniSuper’s head of property and infrastructure, Ken Robbins, the retail space will bring “public art and expression to the forefront and to create a destination that locals can be proud of”.
AMP Capital estimates the project will generate 200 jobs during construction and 600 ongoing jobs on completion.
ADCO Constructions will undertake most work outside the existing centre with minimal disruption to current tenants or trading.
Several other significant commercial and residential projects are currently underway or proposed as the area is expected to hit a population of 440,000 by 2021.
Marrickville Metro’s commencement follows the $800 million Karrinyup shopping centre development, also underway, which AMP Capital is also managing on behalf of owner UniSuper. The development will see Karrinyup Shopping Centre almost double to 109,000 sqm.
