Maintaining the momentum

The shortcomings of our state and territory governments in their supervision of building regulation was highlighted in Monday night’s Four Corners program on ABC TV.

Knowing the commitment of our members to professional standards and great quality projects, it was disappointing to see stories of emotional and financial hardship caused by poor building standards by a minority within our industry.

As I said on the program, the 24 recommendations of the Shergold Weir report – handed to the nation’s building ministers 18 months ago – provide a blueprint for action to address many of the concerns highlighted by Four Corners and to deal with those who don’t do the right thing by building regulations or their customers.

It’s now one month since building ministers met in Sydney and committed to the uniform implementation around the country of the Shergold Weir recommendations. It’s critical that they keep the momentum going to strengthen compliance and enforcement as well as public confidence. It matters for property owners and tenants, as well as our industry as a whole given its size and economic importance.

Next month, we’ll be celebrating the 50th anniversary of our foundation, initially as the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA). As our industry has grown and diversified, so has our organisation as its peak representative.

To reflect the breadth and scale of our industry, we’d like to invite you to be part of our social media activity on Monday 2 September by sharing what your day at work in the property industry looks like. Share your story on your favourite social media channel with the hashtag #iworkinproperty.
