A luxury retirement living development in leafy Toorak was just one of the projects applauded at the National Retirement Living Awards last week. Find out what makes The Benson special.

Taking home the nettletontribe Award for Design Excellence, The Benson is a four-level, 33-apartment complex provides generous independent living units.

The project evolved from a social mission to preserve the loved but crumbling heritage-listed St Peters parish church.

The availability of land around the church led the parish committee to pursue a visionary solution: a new retirement community to simultaneously reinvigorate the area while funding restoration of the church and parish facilities.

Designed by Simon Hanger of the Demaine Partnership and built by Buxton Construction, The Benson offers a retirement community that remains connected to its surroundings.

Each of the Benson’s apartment types meets the Livable Housing Australia gold standard. Adaptability is balanced with high quality finishes, attention to detail and generous spatial provisions.

With more than 180,000 Australians living in 2,300-plus retirement villages, the National Retirement Living Awards play an important role recognising the people and companies enhancing the retirement experience of senior Australians.

Ross Dunning, senior manager of the Arcadia Group’s Rylands of Hawthorn in Melbourne, took home the Programmed Award for Village Manager of the Year.

Nidhi Saunders, a project manager with Lendlease, was presented with the Ingenia Communities Award for Future Retirement Living Leader.

Stockland’s Jane Flynn’s exceptional customer service and strong sales results were recognised with the Imagine Projects Award for Salesperson of the Year.

A unique brokerage model by Stockland, which helps serviced apartment residents access funding for home care services, was honoured with the Novas Award for Retirement Living Innovation.

Lendlease’s $10-million redevelopment of the Ardency Trebartha village in Elizabeth Bay won the Keeley Green Interior Design Award for Best Refurbishment.

A strategic marketing campaign for Ingenia Communities’ Plantations master planned retirement living community on the NSW mid-north coast took out the Wise Agency Award for Marketing Excellence Award.

The National Retirement Living Awards, sponsored by Impact Group, were held on the Gold Coast on Thursday 21 November.
