Our Committees are the heart of the Property Council’s work. They help shape the industry’s future by working with staff on our policy and advocacy, events, industry research, professional development, and awards programs.
As we go through the Committee nomination process for 2023, hear from some current Committee members on what they got out of the experience.
Marina Carroll (pictured above) – Principal and Sector Leader, Education at Architectus – sits on NSW’s Education Property and Precincts Committee and has been involved in education and the PCA for many years. She said it’s exciting to see those two worlds come together.
The committee went through a process of debating and articulating the challenges facing the sector, Marina explained. “We then split up and figured out how we could address each of those barriers, writing a number of case studies, hosting discussions and workshops and launching some of our work at a Property Council event,” she added.
She believes the opportunity to make a positive impact on the sector was one of the most rewarding aspects of her involvement.
“Projects have a lot of impacts…but being involved in the education precincts committee means going beyond the impact of a single project,” Marina said. “We’re working to really understand and tease out the issues that shape – and sometimes, unfortunately, misshape – our sector.”
“We debate and dig into issues, and we identify those driving factors. As a group, we can then methodically look at ways to remove any barriers,” she added.
“That’s incredibly rewarding work that allows us to make change at a more systemic level.”
Brad Collins Managing Director at AESC has been on the Property Council’s Academy Operations and Facilities Management Committee board for four terms and sits as its current chair.
Collins stated that as his career has advanced, the specifics of what he gains from committees have changed.
“Initially, I joined the committee when I was coming up through the ranks within property, in particular, the facilities management areas,” he said.
“At that time, it was more around making connections from a mentor/senior property perspective and to start to gauge the different areas of property that were available under PCA.
“Now that has progressed into my interest and ability to provide some direction and specific skills around facilities management to the broader industry.”
He said as the industry goes through significant change, particularly in light of the pandemic, the committee has been helpful in navigating choppy waters.
“What I enjoy about the committee is meeting with likeminded individuals that are interested in shaping what property and facilities management delivery might look like,” he said.
“Focusing on relevant areas, that might be something that we add to the curriculum and what we deliver as a committee.
“You’re also dealing with a diverse group of committee members, from different geographical locations, and environments, to different property sectors and different areas of expertise.
“That really provides a strong platform for insightful and robust discussion with different experiences and different examples of how operational performance is delivered in the built environment.”
