Fremantle’s long-neglected Elders Wool Stores is finally getting a second lease on life, with Human Urban lodging a development application for the heritage-listed building.

Once central to WA’s wool trade, the 1927 building will be converted into a multi-use development boasting hospitality venues, commercial office space and hundreds of new homes. Under the Human Urban proposal, three levels would be added to the existing four storeys of the Wool Stores.

Thirty-three boutique apartments, including three penthouses, and more than 170 European-style co-living units are set to make up the residential component of the redevelopment.

The original building and façade will largely be retained in the redevelopment, as well as a external ledge that has become one of the nation’s most popular skateboarding destinations.

Human Urban Director Kyle Jeavons said there was no other redevelopment of its kind planned for Perth.

“Throughout our design process we have always understood that this project is uniquely Fremantle, and we have a special responsibility to make sure our plans benefit the City and make a major contribution to re-activating this part of the CBD for future generations,” he said.

Mr Jeavons also said: “We certainly think that there will be very strong demand just because there is no other opportunity to pick something up like this.” Works on the redevelopment are expected to commence in early 2026 and are currently tipped to be completed by mid-2028.
