The largest private hospital development in South Australian history, the $400 million Calvary Adelaide Hospital, has been awarded the state’s top property honour.

Why we love this project:

  • Calvary Adelaide Hospital, the largest private development in the Adelaide CBD in 25 years, was presented with the Rider Levett Bucknall South Australian State Development of the Year award last week
  • The central CBD location, adjacent to police and fire services headquarters, creates an emergency services precinct
  • Daniel Gannon, the Property Council’s South Australian executive director applauds an “outstanding example of positive, catalytic development”.

Calvary Adelaide Hospital, delivered by Commercial & General for owner Dexus Healthcare Property Fund, replaced two existing hospital facilities, one of which had been in operation for more than 100 years.

The 12-storey hospital opened in early 2020 and provides capacity for 344 overnight beds, 62 day-patient beds and a 24/7 emergency department. It also features consulting suites, medical imaging, pathology, 16 operating theatres, four procedure rooms, two catheterisation labs, and staff and administrative amenities.

“The state-of-the-art facility is an exemplar of leading health care design and delivery and is purpose-built to adapt to clinical and technological change into the future,” Gannon notes.

“Its central location on the corner of Angas and Pulteney Streets in the Adelaide CBD, adjacent to both the SA Police and Metropolitan Fire Services headquarters, creates a clearly defined emergency services precinct, with positive implications for disaster management for the state.”

The Rider Levett Bucknall South Australian Development of the Year award is part of the national 2021 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards program. RLB has partnered with the Property Council to present the awards program since its inception in 1982.

RLB managing director John Drillis commends the vision of owner Dexus and operator Calvary Healthcare, and the collaborative efforts of the project team, including developer Commercial & General and head contractor John Holland Group.

“This development showcases tremendous design innovation and adaptability to deliver a hospital purpose built for today, and the future,” Drillis says. RLB provided commercial certainty on the project.

Calvary Adelaide Hospital is now vying for the Woods Bagot Award for Best Public Building at the 2021 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards, which will be held in Sydney on Friday 13 August.

Other South Australian projects shortlisted for the national awards include U City, GPO Exchange and the Salisbury Community Hub. Digital Twinning Australia’s renewable energy system digital twin is also up for an innovation award.
