With the Property Council joining the more than 1100 other organisations that have commenced a RAP journey, it is an honour to be able to celebrate and embrace the oldest living culture on Earth this NAIDOC Week.

The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! It asks all of us to genuinely commit to supporting actual change and reform – something the nation seems to have a growing appetite for.

NAIDOC Week is a time to pay tribute to the past, but also look towards a more equitable future while celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history, teachings, and achievements.

The property industry has two important pillars when it comes to celebrating Indigenous cultures and our journey towards reconciliation.

Firstly, every building is created on land that has been cared for by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and that connection to Country is vitally important.

Our industry, which employs more than 1.4 million people, is also an important partner in First Nations peoples’ quest for economic empowerment after years of dispossession and marginalisation.

Now in its second year, the Property Council & Rork Projects Reconciliation Series Events have promoted the tangible benefits of championing reconciliation at work and home, with the final two events taking place in Melbourne and Brisbane next week.

While we take the time to celebrate culture during NAIDOC Week, it is crucial to remember that we are on a journey and there is still a long way for us to go.

Milestones like NAIDOC Week are a salient time for us as an industry, but also as individuals, to look at how we can get up, stand up and show up to make the change we want to see.
