First dirt turned for luxury Surry Hills apartments

  • October 06, 2020

Construction has started on The Rathbone development, part of AVID Property Group’s $55 million makeover of early 1900s terraces in Sydney’s Surry Hills.

  Why we love this project:

  • The $55 million makeover will pay tribute to the long-demolished 1900s Rathbone Terraces
  • Mixed-use space will provide access to high-end retail for tenants
  • Thirty-three oversized apartments will create a comfortable working from home environment.

The Rathbone signals AVID’s return to the apartment market with a development that promises to create a vibrant and engaging sense of place.

AVID Property Group CEO, Cameron Holt says that pre-commitments of more than 50 per cent has given AVID renewed confidence in the city fringe apartment project.

“There is very limited opportunity for new, contemporary apartment product in Surry Hills. The Rathbone design offers oversized apartments, great for working from home, and an iconic art deco like façade that will give the building a strong presence on flinders street,” says Holt.

Since the onset of COVID-19, buyers have begun to re-evaluate their needs as they spent an increasing amount of time in their homes, Holt adds.

“Buyers are still out there, but they are being highly selective – looking for a premium apartment with ample space, good local amenities and easy access to the city.

“The Rathbone offers a completely customisable experience, so purchasers are able to create a space to suit their lifestyle using four key concept themes. This is a unique approach for apartment living and firmly positions The Rathbone within the luxury market.

“In addition to caring for the environment through sustainable design, we also celebrate The Rathbone’s natural surroundings with the inclusion of private rooftop and communal terraces. Residents and their guests will enjoy sweeping 180-degree easterly views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, across Paddington and Woollahra to Bondi Junction.”

Ground floor retail tenancies have been purchased by construction partner Decon Australia, and will be leased to Italian restaurant group, Salt Meats Cheese.

“The fact that our construction partner will become an owner of the ground floor retail spaces is a sure sign that they too see the value in the project. Our buyers too can have the added confidence that the people building their homes will be committed to the delivery of highest quality.”

The Property Council’s national policy manager for cities, housing and planning, Colin Jennings, and AVID Property Group celebrated the turning the first sod for the new development in late September. The Rathbone is due for completion in mid-2022.
