Melbourne Walk, the first built project in Bourke Street Mall for more than 50 years, is one step closer to completion following a recent topping out ceremony, attended by the City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece.
Developed by Steadfast Capital, designed by Buchan and built by Hickory, this mixed-use development is set to reshape Bourke Street Mall with its blend of heritage preservation and modern design.
The 3,600sqm site bound by Bourke Street, Little Collins Street, The Causeway and Union Lane will become the centrepiece of the Bourke Street Mall revitalisation, and includes 6,000sqm of retail alongside IHG Hotels & Resorts’ first Australian dual-branded hotel, a Hotel Indigo and a Holiday Inn offering more than 450 rooms over nine levels.
Attending the topping out ceremony, City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece said the development will enhance the city’s status as a thriving retail precinct and a must-visit destination.
“Intelligent developments like Melbourne Walk show ongoing confidence in Melbourne’s CBD as the best place in Australia to do business,” said Mr Reece.
Steadfast Capital Executive Director Teck-Lay Tay said “as the need for new retail space increases, new retail assets, such as Melbourne Walk, are well-positioned to lessen the anticipated shortfall in retail space”.
George Abraham, Managing Director, Hickory said Melbourne Walk is a landmark project.
“[It] stands as a testament to our vision of creating better places for future communities. At Hickory, we are proud to have contributed to a development that blends heritage with modern design and will enrich the lives of generations to come.”
Project Architect at Buchan, Hayden Djakic, said the redevelopment will pay homage to the site’s rich heritage.
“Each heritage facade will be seamlessly integrated with a new addition to create a vibrant and engaging streetscape that respects the past while embracing the future. Internally, a network of pedestrian arcades will link through the site, taking cues from the ‘grit and glamour’ character of Melbourne’s celebrated arcades and laneways,” Djakic said.
The project is set for completions in the first half of 2025.
