Contributors put up their hands for committees

  • October 20, 2020

After a record 3,640 nominations for Property Council committees in 2021-22, what happens next?

  Three key takeaways:

  • Positions on the 105 industry committees will be made public in mid-to-late December 2020
  • Committee membership is determined by the Property Council’s executive directors and division councils in each state and territory
  • Of the 3,640 nominations received nationally, 40% were female – with 798 generated through 500 Women in Property.

Every two years, the Property Council spills each of its industry committees and the opportunity arises for new contributors to step up and help set the property industry’s strategic agenda.

“Our members are at the heart of everything we do, and our committees play a critical role in driving the Property Council’s advocacy and engagement agenda,” says the Property Council’s chief operating officer, Kathy Mac Dermott.

“We have once again been bowled over by the interest from members in serving on a Property Council committee, a fantastic testament to the industry’s willingness to work together.”

In 2016, the Property Council launched its 40:40:20 campaign, setting a target of 40 per cent women, 40 per cent men and 20 per cent discretionary on all committees. This target was met in 2016 and exceeded in 2018, reflecting the commitment of our members to build a diverse and inclusive industry.

In 2020, 40 per cent of the nominations were from women in the industry, including an outstanding 798 nominations from 500 Women in Property participants and sponsors.

Mac Dermott says this underscores the power of 500 Women in Property as an agent of change.

“We have an ongoing commitment to achieve diversity of thought, because we know this breeds the best discussions and decisions,” Mac Dermott adds.

With 140 nominations, the most sought-after spots are on the NSW Future Directions committee, and Mac Dermott says this is a “great stepping stone” for people just starting their careers.

“Many committee chairs and division council members started out on our Future Directions’ committees. It’s a brilliant way to build a network and contacts, and to grow alongside your peers.”

Mac Dermott is not surprised to see so many people put their hands up to contribute in 2021.

“The Property Council’s role as an advocate for our industry has never been more important – and neither has the contribution of our members. Together, we are shaping our industry and laying the foundations for our nation’s future growth and prosperity.”
