Brisbane Queensland Australia - September 5 2024: Ongoing construction of the South East Busway at Cultural Centre Bus Station
The CFMEU is impacting all types of construction projects, including office towers, apartments and government projects and the QPC will have the test of holding them to account.

The CFMEU construction division.

The concrete shoes on Australia’s union movement.

Court records and Nine’s Breaking Bad investigations show that the CFMEU and the laws that the rest of us obey have been strangers for forty years.

Politicians on both sides routinely misjudge the level of CFMEU menace and intimidation applied to potential witnesses and whistle-blowers.

Now the CFMEU’s role in dragging down national productivity is coming into focus.

They have long been the single biggest blocker of prefabricated and industrialised construction in the country. But forget the crime against the cost of new homes.

The CFMEU are now working five days pay for less than three days work a week across Brisbane.

Office towers, apartments, government projects. The lot.

All that cost is borne by the rest of us.

Can the Queensland Productivity Commission’s (QPC) first inquiry into construction productivity hold them to account?

Can the Queensland Government and the QPC create a safe environment for individuals and organisations to share challenging information?

The QPC’s draft report will be the first test. Submissions are due 2 June.

Bridging Now to Next

This year’s National Reconciliation Week (NRW) theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future.

This NRW, we are asked to step forward together, to look ahead and continue the push forward.

The property industry is the second largest direct contributor to employment in Australia by industry. We have an important role to play in empowering First Nation’s people and closing the gap by boosting participation in our industry.
