Chief Executive | New Government, new challenges

The Property Council has congratulated Anthony Albanese on becoming Australia’s 31st Prime Minister in an election result with myriad political implications.

We’ve also thanked Scott Morrison, Josh Frydenberg and their colleagues for their service to the nation, particularly for guiding Australia through the immense challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Property Council has worked closely with Mr Albanese and his senior colleagues in opposition and in government, and we know the experience they bring to their new roles.

As the new Government forms, the country is facing a very different set of challenges from those of the past two years.

There is the urgent challenge of addressing the chronic skills shortages, with the immediate need to ramp up the entry of offshore students, skilled workers and permanent migrants.

There is the battle against inflation, now looming as the biggest threat facing the economy.

There is the pressing issue of housing affordability, where Labor has promised to create a Housing Supply and Affordability Council to set housing targets for the states and territories, an important foundation.

And then there is the vital need to continue to invest in the right infrastructure, shape our cities for the future, cement our position as a magnet for investment, transition to net zero emissions and lift the nation’s anaemic productivity performance.

These are the issues the Property Council is preparing to take into the Albanese Government – our election platform is as relevant as ever.

A new government with new challenges, and the property industry will be crucial to their delivery.
