It is a big day for housing supply. A day that few will remember through a housing supply lens. (Fire up Matildas.)
Let us be among the few to dwell on the moment.
For the first time this century, an Australian Prime Minister has convened State Premiers on better city planning and housing supply.
Twenty years overdue, tackling a housing supply deficit across at-market, social and affordable housing.
Tackling underinvestment in our planning systems that don’t do what every Australian needs them to do – take a state-wide view and a nation-wide accountability for providing all Australians with the chance to have a roof over their heads (see Rob Pradolin’s thoughts on this here).
This includes strategically preserving key industrial and commercial land by better utilising green and brownfields residential land, best aligning to public transport and our national sustainability targets.
That delay, that gap, that need, is not at the feet of this group of leaders.
Their singular responsibility is – what next.
How to swiftly position Australia for the next twenty years of this century to welcome new and potential Australians who enrich us all, fill our productivity supply gaps, especially in property, and support our education sector.
Let us hope National Cabinet strike a deal today to change the next twenty years of Australian growth to the benefit of every member of our community.
It’s a big climb from here.
Whatever we do, we can’t stay at base camp.
