Tomorrow will be my final day at the Property Council after more than eight years as Chief Executive and a collective 25 years with the organisation.
It has been my special privilege to lead this organisation over this period and to represent an industry which delivers so many benefits for the nation.
Fundamentally this is an industry which delivers prosperity, jobs and strong communities. It shapes the very future of our cities, suburbs and towns. And it literally touches the lives of every Australian.
Over my time I’ve seen this industry change substantially and overwhelmingly for the better. The evidence is everywhere: the quality of the assets, the commitment to sustainability, the sophistication of the businesses, the depth of capital and delivery partners, and the breadth of sectors the industry has professionalised.
The industry has also been honest and aware enough to embrace the need to tackle gender diversity within its own ranks, to make a serious contribution to the problem of homelessness and to begin a reconciliation journey with First Nations Australians.
You have also given the Property Council the license to do more than represent your heartland interests, to also advance reform agendas on cities, housing affordability, public finances and our net zero challenge.
It has been my pleasure to work alongside you and to learn so much from so many of you.
As Chief Executive I can also proudly say that this is an industry which is extraordinarily well served by its industry body.
The Property Council is respected, influential and widely recognised as one of the most important business groups in the country. The services we deliver are first-rate. And the dedication and commitment of the staff team are beyond question.
The Board is well advanced in the search for my successor, although the holiday break will mean an announcement should be expected in February.
The Board has appointed Jane Fitzgerald (Chief Operating Officer) and Mike Zorbas (Group Executive Policy and Advocacy) as Joint Acting CEOs for the interim period – so the organisation will be in very good hands.
Thank you to all of you for engagement, support and full-throated advice.
A merry festive season to you all.
