The Australian summer has been marked by some devastating weather events which have significantly impacted many communities.
Whether it has been bushfires in southern Tasmania, the flood emergency in North Queensland or the ongoing drought across large swathes of the country, our resilience to extreme weather events is being tested more frequently. It’s a salutary reminder of the importance of our environment and our place within it.
Australia’s property industry has a global reputation for leadership on sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint of our built environment.
One of the champions of this outcome has been the outgoing Green Building Council of Australia leader Romilly Madew who is about to embark on another nation-shaping role at Infrastructure Australia.
While leaders such as Romilly have helped change the way we look at the bigger picture and build on the ground, there are people working across our industry to strengthen our climate resilience through initiatives such as the Resilient Sydney strategy and the Property Council’s National Sustainability Roundtable which are featured in this issue of Property Australia.
The challenge of climate change is real and our industry is hard at work to mitigate its impact and build for a low carbon future.
