An incredible week on the Property Council’s study tour of New York

Monday saw an incredible first official day of the Property Council’s study tour of the Big Apple.

The delegation heard from Kenneth Lewis, AIA, Basha Gerhards, Carl Weisbrod, George Tietjen III and Samantha Davis as they gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of some of New York’s best projects.

Including Moynihan Station, Manhattan West – Brookfield, Moynihan Connector/The High Line and Hudson Yards, led by Julia Murphy AIA, LEED AP.

All wrapped up with an intimate dinner with David Green, who shared insights into the US market.

Thank you to our day one hosts Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), Sentinel Real Estate, Arup, REBNY (Real Estate Board of New York) and Brookfield Properties.

Tuesday started with a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. Sorry not sorry.

Next stop was an exclusive access to one of the best build-to-rent developments in NYC, The Amberly, hosted by Woods Bagot.

Tyler Hughes, Matt Stephenson and Jonathan Bennett with moderator Nicole Battley presented insights into NYC’s market trends and into the multifamily/build-to-rent industry.

Followed by a jam-packed afternoon including a scenic walk at the DUMBO, a visit to the Time Out Market and a tour of Brooklyn’s most iconic transformed building, The Refinery at Domino. Thanks to our host CBRE and speaker Brett Shannon.

Wednesday morning started with art and science with the man behind the transformation of Bryant Park, Dan Biederman.

Followed by tours of Brookfield Place and the 9/11 Memorial, thanks to speaker Peyton Elder.

Our study group heard from Vishaan Chakrabarti, FAIA on redesigning cities for equity and inclusion and explored Oculus Transport Hub with Anthony Pastore.

The day ended with Consul-General of New York Heather Ridout AO, discussing economic partnerships between Australia and the US. And finally dinner to reflect on it all.

Thanks to our hosts Brookfield Properties and AECOM Tishman.

Thursday in the Big Apple began with Paul Stanbridge presenting on the workplace of the future, 50 Hudson Yards hosted by Foster + Partners.

Minutes away is the Lever House in Park Avenue. An all-glass iconic architectural project. Thanks to speaker Paul Massey III and host Brookfield Properties.

Speakers from host Lendlease Bruce Ambler, Warren Loy and Lathy Madi hosted a lunch and learn, where they discussed Lendlease’s development footprint in NYC.

Ending the day in style with a reimagined Breakfast at Tiffany’s tour in the afternoon led by Jee Mee Kim-Diaz, Ramon Ocampo, RA, NCARB, LEED GA, RDI and Michael Rostkowski

The final day of the tour was a rainy one but that didn’t stop us from enjoying a gondola ride to Cornell Tech.

Led by Daniel O’Shaughnessy, our study group had a great time riding the gondola and learning about how Cornell Tech was an exceptional example of sustainability in real estate. Thanks to our host Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM).

From Roosevelt Island, we headed into the internationally renowned brand for incredible indoor food and retail marketplace, Chelsea Markets.

Speakers from our host Arup, James Angevine and Zoe Brown shared the story behind transforming the Hudson River’s Pier 55, and how it defines not only the power of community but collaboration.

To top it off, our study group spent the last of the tour in the very heart of Times Square and learned about its successful reinvention delivered by Times Square Alliance’s Public Space Management Coordinator, Carlo Steinman.
