A planning system without any friends

Last weekend’s state election in NSW underscores a simple truth: governments focused on infrastructure investment will be backed by voters to get on with the job.

The Property Council has congratulated Premier Gladys Berejiklian on the Coalition’s re-election in NSW with a majority in its own right. We look forward to working with the Premier and her ministerial team to deliver the policies and projects that underpin economic prosperity and liveability in Australia’s most populous state.

One of the new government’s priorities must be to reform the state’s planning system. There’s no denying it remains the worst in the country, characterised by delay, cost, lack of transparency and uncertain outcomes.

It’s a planning system without any friends – one that fails the community and stymies growth. The Property Council has released a guide for the NSW Government which outlines practical actions to fix the planning mess and deliver some quick wins to create great places and support jobs and productivity.

With a result in NSW, attention now turns to Canberra for next week’s federal budget and the date for the May federal election. In the meantime, you can track the big issues and the Property Council’s positions through our federal election campaign site
