The federal election campaign is off and running. On May 21 Australians will choose who will govern us for the next three years.
Like every election, the political equation is about which party will win a majority of seats in the House of Representatives (or get the support of the cross bench if this is needed). While this poll will surely have its surprises, the outcome will likely be determined in 20 or so marginal seats around the country. We do not attempt to second-guess the result.
The Property Council team has engaged heavily with the Government and the Opposition throughout the pandemic and the parliamentary term, with our work stepping up again over recent months. Policymakers on both sides of the aisle understand our agenda and the benefits it would bring to the nation.
To mark the commencement of the campaign, we are now releasing our federal election platform – Seven Steps to a Prosperous Australia – which sets out the advocacy agenda the Property Council has been pursuing for many months. The key planks of this platform are:
- Help our CBDs bounce back
- A ‘welcome to Australia’ plan to become a magnet for talent and capital
- Unlock housing supply and boost affordable housing
- Support older Australians with appropriate and age-friendly housing
- Liveable and connected cities
- Plan for net zero emissions in buildings
- A productivity agenda that makes our cities engines of growth.
This is a platform which will help create a strong economy, great cities and thriving communities. Each recommendation is supported by detailed research and data.
The Property Council will also be providing members with regular election updates so you don’t miss the policy commitments relevant for our industry.
Strap yourselves in for an intriguing campaign.
