An $800 million redevelopment of the Karrinyup shopping centre in Perth will double its footprint, incorporate new supermarkets, large-format international retailers and an entertainment precinct to offer the “next generation of retail experiences”.

North of the river, Karrinyup was constructed in 1973. The centre currently boasts more than 180 specialty stores, and is home to Myer, David Jones, Big W and Woolworths.

The redevelopment, which AMP Capital is managing on behalf of owner UniSuper, will see the centre expand from 59,874 sqm to 109,000 sqm. The upgrade will include 290 stores, a new alfresco dining precinct, a 10-screen HOYTS cinema and 134 high-end residential apartments.

Carmel Hourigan, AMP Capital’s global head of real estate, says the redevelopment will incorporate the “next generation of retail experiences” to position the asset as a destination.

“Our vision is to create a place that’s uniquely Perth and applies what we know about retail trends of the future and the expectations of our customers,” Hourigan says.

“However, what really makes this development special is the connections we build and the lasting impact we can make in the community, particularly by creating long-term employment opportunities.”

AMP Capital expects the project, which will take three years to complete, will generate around 2,500 jobs during construction and a further 2,500 retail, support and management jobs.

Kent Robbins, UniSuper’s head of property and infrastructure, says the revamp will “deliver new dining, entertainment and retail formats consistent with the fast-moving evolution of the retail market globally, while retaining a distinctive Karrinyup style”.

Builder Multiplex will work with architecture firm Taylor Robinson Chaney Broderick and Hames Sharley on the design of the project.

The centre will remain trading throughout the development program with works scheduled to minimise disruption.
