The future of workplaces will be defined by technology and innovation businesses at Central Place Sydney says Darren Steinberg as Dexus and Frasers Property Australia select the winning design for Australia’s own Silicon Valley.

  Why we love this project:

  • The $2.5 billion Central Place Sydney project, adjacent to Atlassian’s new headquarters, promises to cement Tech Central’s role as a key driver of innovation and growth
  • The development will contribute to Sydney’s 24-hour economy, while supporting 700 jobs in construction and more 10,000 jobs when complete
  • Central Place Sydney will feature 100% renewable energy, touchless entry and a closed-cavity façade system powered by artificial intelligence and solar glass.

Tech Central is the NSW Government’s vision for 250,000 sqm of office space stretching from Central Station to Camperdown.

Home to start-ups, scale-ups and innovation ecosystem partners – including local technology giant Atlassian – the NSW Government allocated $48.2 million in funding in June. 260820 - Project of the Week - Central Place 5

Dexus and Frasers Property Australia have appointed international design team Fender Katsalidis and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill as architects on their $2.5 billion Central Place Sydney development.

The winning design was selected following the first City of Sydney design competition run entirely online, with participants from six countries.

The announcement follows Atlassian’s commitment to anchor the precinct at new headquarters above YHA Central Railway Square.

According to Dexus CEO, Darren Steinberg, the tech-focused design for Central Place Sydney comprises two office towers of up to 39 levels and a landmark sculptural building.

“The future of work and workplaces will be defined by the technology and innovation businesses who will occupy this precinct, with Central Place Sydney set to become a leading innovative workplace and a global exemplar of city centre regeneration,” Steinberg says.

Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO Scott Farquhar says technology can turbo-charge Australia’s recovery.

“We want to create jobs, ideas and innovation. This will be home to thousands of workers and the best new ideas. If you want to work in tech – this is the place you will want to be,” Farquhar says.

260820 - Project of the Week - Central Place 1Rod Fehring, Frasers Property Australia’s CEO, says Central Place Sydney is a “never to be repeated opportunity in scale and potential”.

“It demands an inclusive approach through strong partnerships, a long-term view and, critically, an internationally recognisable design.

“This is a precinct Frasers Property knows well and has helped shape, with the world-renowned Central Park having delivered real public realm improvements while celebrating the precinct’s place in Sydney’s history,” Fehring adds.

NSW minister for jobs, investment, tourism and Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres, says the government’s long-term goal for Tech Central is to create 25,000 innovation jobs and encourage 25,000 new students to study STEM and life sciences.

In time, Tech Central will provide 50,000 sqm of affordable space for start-up and scale-up businesses, bringing up to 25,000 new jobs to the state and strengthening its economic recovery from COVID-19.
