SHINING A LIGHT ON RETIREMENT LIVING

By 2030, one in five of us will be over the age of 65.

While five per cent of Australians call a retirement village home today, this figure will double over the next decade.

Despite their growing popularity, governments know very little about these communities or the people who live in them.

And this why the Property Council is looking to shed light on this vital part of our nation’s social fabric.

In the past few weeks, we’ve brought together more than 600 people at state summits in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

Our Retirement Living Council has assessed the current state of play, launching the first annual census of the nation’s retirement villages.

We’ve pinpointed the indicators of effective planning policy in The 5 A’s of Retirement Living.

And we’ve partnered with Alzheimer’s Australia NSW to look at how villages can tackle the growing issue of dementia.

What’s next?

We need to keep the pressure on to elevate retirement living in the minds of politicians, policy makers and the general public – which is what we’ll be doing at the National Retirement Living Summit in November.
