Wollongong – Creating a city for people
In 2014, Wollongong City Council partnered with internationally renowned consulting firm, Gehl Architects, to undertake a Public Spaces Public Life study. The study seeks to assess how Wollongong’s public spaces perform in order to identify ways to make the city more liveable and put people first in the planning process to create animated, attractive, sustainable and safe cities.
Wollongong City Council released a Draft Report of A City for People in October 2015, which draws together a range of research, community initiatives and engagement, including the Property Council’s Shaping Wollongong. It identifies six public life projects that address the findings of the study which revealed a city with a void of residents at its core, an imbalance between transport modes with pedestrians and cyclists at the bottom of the hierarchy, and a lack of connection to the escarpment and foreshore.
A number of short, medium and long-term actions are identified for the following six unique public life projects identified:
- Rail Arrival
- Western Crown
- Crown Streem Mall
- MacCabe Park
- Arts Precinct
- Foreshore
Wollongong City Council are seeking views on the Draft Report and people’s ideas on how to improve the city centre.
The study will be finalised and the delivery of recommendations will occur over the course of 2016.
