Western Corridor Lunch
The Property Council’s annual Western Corridor Lunch, at Brookwater Golf & Country Club, explored the theme of ‘Places for People’.
Chris Isles, Planning Director – Place Design Group, outlined the key principles behind good place-making – an increasingly sought after component of urban design. Chris illustrated how place-making is a very broad spectrum of experiences, from micro hot-spots like mobile food van locations all the way through to major master planned precincts such as Springfield.
Key trends in place-making identified by Chris included a major generational change in demand. With the next generations desiring more urban experiences in the suburbs, it is clear that the offering of new master-planned communities will need to keep pace with rapid shifts in resident expectations.
Following his presentation, Chris was joined on stage by Queensland Government Architect, Malcolm Middleton and Lendlease’s Brisbane Showgrounds Public Realm Design Manager, Tanya Neville, for a panel discussion moderated by Jen Williams, Qld Deputy Executive Director of the Property Council.
Malcolm Middleton drew parallels between the ground breaking greenfield place making occurring at Springfield and the revitalisation of South Bank as an existing site. While the redevelopment of South Bank is heralded as one of the great success stories of Brisbane’s urban regeneration, Malcolm reminded guests that it was only after many failures and constant evolution that South Bank has become such an integral component of the Brisbane landscape.
Tanya Neville outlined the need to adopt a partnership approach to fully unlock the place-making potential of a site. Cooperation between the stakeholders, government and the community has led to excellent outcomes at Lendlease’s showgrounds developments and is a model that Tanya believes is critical to successful place-making.
The Property Council would like to thank the speakers for sharing their insights into how to achieve best practice place-making and Springfield Land Corporation for their sponsorship of the Western Corridor event.
