WA landlords offered 100 million land tax relief grant package

Land tax relief part of new property and construction industry package

Property Council WA welcomes the State Government’s $100 million land tax relief package. The land tax relief will be available to landlords who waive rent and outgoings for at least three months from 1 March 2020 for small business tenants. Commercial landlords will be able to apply to the Small Business Development Commission for land tax relief from 1 May 2020.

Property Council WA Executive Director Sandra Brewer said the industry has been concerned that many landlords and tenants have found themselves in an extremely difficult position as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The State Government’s $154.5 million relief package for tenants, landlords and the construction industry goes some way to giving commercial landlords some breathing space.

“The $100 million in land tax grant reliefs available for commercial landlords who reduce rents for small business operators hit by the pandemic will be very welcome.

“We have been concerned that many landlords with big debts have had no relief, other than offers of putting off payments, from banks. This goes some way to giving them cashflow to keep their businesses viable.

“We have seen some great examples of landlords and tenants working together and it’s great to see this acknowledged by the State Government.”
