Victorian review underway

A long-anticipated review of the Victorian Retirement Villages Act is underway, with the release of an issues paper to canvas views on a set of wide-ranging questions that will inform the review and determine its priorities.

The Consumer Affairs Victoria issues paper “addresses key issues relating to the retirement village sector that have been the subject of recent reviews and inquiries (including the 2016-17 Parliamentary Inquiry), are commonly raised with the Government or have been identified as potential emerging issues and challenges for the sector”. Russell Kennedy Lawyers has provided a concise overview of the content in its recent alert.

A set of questions has been devised for each section to solicit industry and community feedback; these sections are:

  1. The retirement village sector
  2. The regulatory and policy framework
  3. Entering a retirement village
  4. Living in a retirement village
  5. Leaving a retirement village
  6. Dispute resolution
  7. Enforcement

The feedback received will inform Consumer Affairs Victoria and lead to the development of an options paper with proposals for reform, to be released in the first half of 2020.

Feedback is due by 6 December 2019 and can be submitted via the Engage Victoria website. The Property Council will coordinate a submission on the industry’s behalf – any members who wish to have an input into this submission should email [email protected] as soon as possible.
