Unconscious bias workshopLast week the Property Council ran a 3-hour professional development workshop specifically designed for property industry members on the importance of understanding and repositioning ‘unconscious bias.’ The workshop, facilitated by Symmetra – an international consultancy renowned for its expertise in workplace diversity, ethics and sustainability – explored how unconscious bias and other sub-conscious processes have a significant effect on our everyday decision-making in the workplace. Through the interactive component of the workshop, participants were able to obtain a good understanding of how everyone’s unconscious bias can be positively repositioned to create a fair, innovative and collaborative workplace. The key professional development message that stemmed from the morning was that embracing diversity, and especially diversity of thought, can be a driver of improved innovation and problem solving in business. The growing national trend for diversity is stemming not from a desire for social change, but from the commercial competitive advantage that can be obtained through a diverse workforce. The Property Council would like to thank the event hosts Grant Thornton for their generous support of this professional development workshop.
