Two Western Australian developments win national awards for excellence
An affordable housing development that breaks the mould and a business park that has delivered $37billion to the economy have been recognised at the 2016 Property Council of Australia / Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards.
The BHC Award for Best Affordable Housing Development was presented to the WA Housing Authority for its ‘One on Aberdeen’ development in Perth’s CBD.
“The ‘One on Aberdeen’ project is an innovative example of how government and industry can partner to deliver outstanding affordability outcomes,” says the Property Council of Australia’s Chief Executive, Ken Morrison.
Led by the Housing Authority and Diploma Properties, the 13-storey development consists of seven commercial and 161 one and two bedroom residential units. The development achieved per cent affordability by incorporating a range of housing options, including social and affordable rental, traditional rental and home ownership and shared home ownership.
Rather than secure a capital expenditure allocation from the WA Government, the Housing Authority used its land to underwrite the building, which enabled the developer to secure finance for construction.
“The Department understood the challenges faced by the private sector and has developed an innovative solution which rethinks the traditional public housing model, has ramped up the vibrancy in an under-activated part of Perth’s CBD and is delivering good value for taxpayer dollars,” Mr Morrison explains.
LandCorp bagged the LJ Hooker Commercial Award for Best Business or Industrial Park for Enterprise Park in Perth. The first stage of Enterprise Park was released in 1989, and is now home to 2 commercial, service, manufacturing and light industrial businesses.
Managing Director of Rider Levett Bucknall WA, Mark Bendotti, says LandCorp’s vision for a multidecade, high quality industrial project has been achieved, and Enterprise Park is now one of the nation’s most innovative industrial estates.
“This project underscores the positive impact of development on jobs, prosperity and local communities,” Mr Bendotti says.
