Transforming The Royal Adelaide
A joint venture between Commercial & General and John Holland has been named by the South Australian Government as the exclusive Preferred Proponent to reinvigorate the old Royal Adelaide Hospital site. The joint venture’s proposal project already has the support of the Botanic Gardens of South Australia, the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia.
The project will ultimately be a global showcase of South Australia’s thought leadership – a showcase of the future of how we live, how we learn, how we celebrate our arts and culture and how we use and honour our environment.
The planned redevelopment includes four key ‘quarters’:
- Garden: with more than five hectares of open space being publicly accessible, seamlessly linked and integrated with the Botanic Gardens, civic spaces that provide opportunities for future cultural use;
- Arts, Culture and Tourism: a cultural precinct adjacent to North Terrace featuring public art and performance spaces, a European-style piazza and an international five-star hotel;
- Knowledge and Innovation: a state-of-the-art knowledge and innovation campus with curated incubator spaces bringing together and co-locating universities, start-ups, businesses, professional service firms, research institutes and social organisations; and
- Living: a 1000-home multi-generational living precinct with a mix of students, affordable and a high tech ageing well residency.
The 10-year redevelopment will deliver a range of significant benefits for Adelaide and South Australia, including a 40 FTE net increase to the State’s employment and an estimated $7.5 billion in economic benefits over the first 12 years of the project.
An extensive community engagement and consultation process will take place over the coming months.
