The WIP Around: Alison Robertson

The Property Council sat down with Alison Robertson, WA Portfolio Manager, Brookfield Property Partners

What time do you start work each day?

Generally around 8.30 am on a normal day although corporate breakfast meetings do often present themselves to attend.

How much time do you spend on social media each week?

Maybe 2 hours (maximum) – my preference is socialising face to face.

What’s the funniest piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?

Wear less make up (they obviously hadn’t seen me without it)!

What is the best piece of advice you would give to an aspiring young women in the property industry?

Have courage, determination, empathy and importantly, be yourself.    Dress for where you want to be (in your career).  When appointed to a position of power or leadership – don’t let it go to your head!

Sum up your job in 3 words

Leadership, inspiration, empathy.

If you weren’t a ‘Portfolio Manager’ what would you do and why?

I would likely have followed a career in graphic or interior design.  I have always enjoyed tinkering with design in general (whether it be in a landscaping sense or interior) and enjoyed graphic design in my secondary schooling years but was faced with minimal options as a female to advance this as a career.

What made you choose your career path?

I started my property career as a secretary over 30 years ago in commercial property (after having diverse roles without direction previously) – I have never looked back particularly with the support of mentors and wealth of knowledge achieved by involvement with all stakeholders in property.  There have been challenges set for me to make a difference particularly for women in our industry, and be proud of achieving and helping others to do the same!
