The real City Deal
Last week the Property Council released a discussion paper that clearly outlines the framework to help governments at all levels as they design the first generation of City Deals in Australia.
With both sides of federal politics acknowledging the importance of cities to the nation’s economic future, the City Deals approach provides an opportunity to take a long-term and performance based approach to how we manage and grow our cities.
The paper – “What makes a City Deal a Real Deal?” – lays out the 10 building blocks of a ‘real deal City Deal’, and pulls no punches in listing what a City Deal is or should not be.
The paper uses the challenges facing out cities to map how a City Deal can bring governments and industry together to achieve long-term economic growth and prosperity in a way that is not subject to the vagaries of the political cycle.
According to the paper, an emphasis on all levels of government working together, meaningful consultation with the private sector and the community, and long-term evidence based policy are the principles underpinning a successful City Deal.
The Property Council has been consistently championing City Deals, and we look forward to continuing to work with all governments to shape real City Deals in Australia.
